Preview does not display anything

I am new to BIRT. I've downloaded the RCP Designer and tried building a simple grid based report (header/details/footer), but whenever I click the "Preview" tab, nothing displays. There's a button that says "Show Report Parameters".

I've also tried Run->View Report and selected PDF, HTTP, in Web Viewer, etc, and nothing ever displays.

If found a .log file under the following directory (birt-rcp-report-designer-2_3_0workspace.metadata) and there seems to be some errors (see below):

I'm stuck.

Can someone help?

Also, I might add that I downloaded the birt runtime version and ran getReport.sh and got something, but not what I expected.

Here's what I got:

essentially, for every row in my Data Set view that I've constructed, I keep getting the same (first) row, but repeated N-times where N is the total number of rows.

If I click the "preview results" from the Data Set, I see all the data as it should be (ref the second set of data above).

So, I have two questions:
1) as stated in my original post, why can't I get the RCP Designer to show any results in the main window when I try to generate results or click preview
2) why, when I run the genReport.bat script, does the output not match what is in the preview results view from the Data Set?

Obviously I can't get the full report cause I don't have access to your database, but when I click the preview button, I get at least the header and all of that above the data access error. Are you not getting that much even?

I get the header and a repeat of the first row of my data N times (where N equals the number of rows in my "Audit View" data set.

That is one issue (not sure why that is happening).

The other thing that puzzles me is why I cannot click "Preview" in my RCP Designer and see the results in the main window of my designer.

I can only view the output by running my report in the runtime component. I was expecting to be able to do that directly from the designer. Am I wrong there?

I'm gonna have to guess it's probably a query problem. Not for certain, but there is no reason your design shouldn't display in the preview tab. What is the relationship in the MSG_ID join? Is it 1:n, n:1, n:m, or 1:1?

Have you tried running a simple report design made from the sample database?

The MSG_ID relationship is N:1.

I've thought about creating a more simple query, but the part the concerns me is that even some examples I've downloaded do not display from my designer. The can only be displayed from the runtime version.

It makes me think that I've missed some key part of the installation/configuration.

All I did was download the RCP Designer option from the Eclipse/BIRT homepage. I also downloaded the runtime version.

I don't think there's much of a way to have missed a part of the installation. You could try creating a simple dataset to display in a table. You could also create one from the sample classic models database that comes with BIRT to check on your designer. Without being able to duplicate the problem, it's hard for me to tell what's happening.

See if you can reproduce the problem with the sample database and attach the report design so I can see it.

Yep, I get this same problem with other examples too. Must be some RCP Designer misconfiguration on my part.

It's a bit confussing, but I am now working around it by running my report in the runtime package while editing in the designer.

Ty,

If you think that something was possibly installed incorrectly. You could always remove your workspace file with your report designs. Delete the designer and re-install it. Maybe that'd do it.
