Legend layout

Hello,
I have a legend in the middle & below the chart. I want it to grow first horizontal, then it should grow to next row if necessary. There are very many options to format the legend layout but it looks like it has no effect - I mean options: Stretch & Direction. The rest of them does something

The only thing I achieved was an exception when the chart was thinner than the legend. But it happened only once.

I'm using Birt 2.3 in Eclipse.

Can anyone help?

You specify the legend "Orientation" as horizontal and "Position" as below, it would be just like what you want. If you want some blank spaces around the legend, you can adjust the "Insets" properties.

There must be some bug because I got the exception again right now when I started Eclipse - see attachment.
Also have a look at the picture with the chart - when it is wide enough to display whole legenda, it works. When I make it smaller (half width) to test legend wrapping, then I get the exception. When I hide the legend, chart is displayed correctly when it is half-wide.
I'm I doing something wrong or is it a bug?

Hi Dawton,

I tested a chart in a report design in 2.3 and made it have a ton of legend items so that it would for sure test the wrapping. It seems to work just fine. I've attached a screenshot. You might try rebuilding your chart and see if something about that chart is maybe corrupt.

Hi Michael,
thanks for testing it. I created a completely new chart but the result is the same - exception is here again.
I found out that the problem appears only when I'm using optional series grouping and display labels of the secondary group in the legend - then there is always the exception.
I tried to create a simple chart with a legend and it wraps fine even for very thin chart.
Please, can you have a look on it? Or is there some solution?

I did have optional Y series grouping on the chart that I showed the screenshot of. Can you attach your report design? Maybe I or somebody who looks at it will see something that could be causing it.

Here is a screenshot when I run your report with the chart small enough that the legend has to wrap. The only thing I changed is the type of the chart image from SVG to PNG because I have turned off the support for SVG in my preview screen. I do see a problem with it though. While it looks like the first null is correct in the legend, it seems that the second null is not right. The first item in the 2nd row is "null" no matter which series it is. This is definitely a bug. I don't get the exception you said you got though.

thanks for testing the report! I changed it to PNG and the result is still the same - exception.
As for the second "null" value - it is displayed only when the legend is wrapped? (there should be displayed "Notebook" for that serie)
Can it depend on my SW configuration? I'm using WinXP Pro SP3, jre1.6.0_03 and Eclipse 3.4.0, Build id: I20080523-0100 (I downloaded this eclipse from the eclipse web as a package with Birt designer included)

NOW IT WORKS!

After I downloaded the latest All-in-one package (Version: 3.4.0, Build id: I20080617-2000)
But there is still the issue with the NULL value of every first item of every row in the legend.

Glad you got it working. It looks like the extra null values will be corrected in 2.3.1 according to this bug report from eclipse.org:<br />
