report parameter default to today's

Is there anyway I can set the default date on a date report parameter to today? I would even consider using java to override the priginal values.

I have looked at the scripted data set as an option. I was looking to keep the report parameter data type set to Date and the display type set to text box. I was looking for a method where either I could set that default date to today, first day of year or first day of the month depending on the report type. While still keeping the text box for the user to specify a date of their choice. On our system when birt runs we have a calendar icon that gets displayed when we use the date text box.
