Configuring BIRT to work with Maximo 7.1 Templates

I am just learning BIRT and trying to get it configured correctly to use the templates delivered with Maximo 7.1. I have followed the instructions in IBM's Report Developer's Guide, but can't seem to get it to work. Does anybody have experience with this?

Yes, I've gone through both these documents and struggled with IBM support for a couple weeks, but still get all kinds of errors.
