Connecting to a SQL db using JDBC

Hello
I have trouble connecting to a SQL DB SQL server 2000.. I downloaded the SQLJDBC4.jar file and placed it in the classpath, but i get the error class not found when trying to connect. I also tried using SQLJDBC.jar file but still does not work.
Can anyone please let me know if I need to do anything else to connect from BIRT
