special characters in a report parameter - ?

I have a req to pass special characters especially - £ symbol - but BIRT does not seem to read it as £ and shows a different character altogether. The error is causing me to run the report incorrectly.
Can you suggest a solution please

Hello Michael
I use the birt-report-designer-all-in-one-2_2_2. resolved the issue as the data is from a csv file. so changed the charset to ISO - 8859-1 and got it working
