BIRT 2.3.1 integration with Tomcat 6.0.16

Does anyone know how to integrate BIRT with Tomcat so that it will produce a report via a servlet? At present the servlet fails on the IRunAndRenderTask.run() call. The exception thrown is a NullPointerException that specifies:

Software in use is: 
Tomcat 6.0.16 running on Ubuntu linux. 
BIRT 2.3.1 runtime 
 
Some background on what I've done so far: 
1. Successfully created PDF via application. Generated a PDF report from a Java application (running within eclipse) using the unzipped Birt2.3.1 runtime to produce a report successfully. This suggests there isn't a problem with the report being used. Birt runtime in my code was explicitly set for EngineConfig [eg config.setBIRTHome("/opt/APPSERVERS/birt-runtime-2_3_1/ReportEngine");] 
2. Deployed the Birt Runtime onto Tomcat in the web application running the servlet. I followed the instructions at:

3. Created a servlet as provided in the example at:

Can you try your code with a sample report? Also does your code work with a report that does not contain a Chart?

I'm having the same issue on Tomcat 5.5.26 + BIRT runtime 2.3.1.

I tried both the birt.war included in the runtime, as well as the WebViewerExample web application.

The default "test.rptdesign" works and displays correctly. The "test1.rptdesign" which contains a bar chart does not work and causes the following:

Yes, I saw this thread and tried to copy both xerces and xalan jars into the WEB-INF/lib directory. Still no luck. I'm using Tomcat 5 so I can't change the web.xml in the same manner as proposed for Orion... as far as I know, Tomcat-5 does not have these configuration options for classloading.

Any other ideas?

It would be good if you could log a bug for this. Any chance you could try to download tomcat 6 on desktop and try it there? I have it depolyed both to tomcat 5.5 and 6.

do you get this error with the JavaBridge installed in tomcat or just stand alone? I get this error on stand alone and got it to work using the following work around.

Im having a go at trying your fix, ive got no idea where to place the file so it will compile. Its been 3 years since ive done any java dev work so Im a bit rusty.

I tried setting the class path of the compiler to the ReportEngine lib dir but that didnt work

I compiled the class into a jar which I can post if you would like. I just put this jar in a directory in my php app and used the java_require command:

I do not think this is the best solution because it does not shutdown the platform. The latest copy of the Bridge fixes this by adding hooks, but it includes BIRT 2.2.2. I got it to work with 2.3.1 and I am in the process of trying to get it uploaded to the sourceforge site.

Allright, I managed to get a class compiled of your hack, I included it in my birt code but it didn't help, I just moved it up further (before createRunAndRenderTask) and it runs all the time now

One thing i found, I had the same problem regardless of using an older version of PJB standalone, or the latest version in tomcat 6. It allways managed to create a chart report once, then i needed to restart the java bridge

That is the exact issue I had before I created the hack. I am in the process of trying to upload a revised version of the JavaBridge.war file that contains BIRT 2.3.1. I will let you know when I get it posted.
