column binding on grid

Hi,
i have a requirement in which i have to split a string and display a particular string in a Data Item which should be present in the grid.The grid is present in the page Header.This the expression i have written for this

var y=new Array();
if(dataSetRow["questioncode"]=="PATIENTDETAILS"){
var x=new String(dataSetRow["answertext"]);
y=x.split("||",-1);
}
y[0]

where answerText is "Levanter||Mellison||Male||11/18/1990||No||1027493||03/31/2008||04/05/2008".
but the value is not displayed while i see the output.

But if i use the same data item with this expression in the Table the value is displayed why is this so??
Is there any way to display it in the Grid which is present in the page Header?

got the answer,
grid doesnt display the value because it doesn't iterate through the result set where as table item iterate through the result set so that when it encounters PATIENTDETAILS it goes inside the if condition and does the split on the string and display it
