Need help with reports parameters

Hi
I am kind of new to this forum and hope to get some help from you guys

I want to create a simple report from a DB I have.
So far so good (just a simple thing, like show all people's ID)
But, I want to get a param from the user and use this param(lets call it X) to show only X first rows of the table.

How can I do it please?
BTW, I have used some tutrials and so on, but still don't know to much about parameters, hope you can help me here to, please!

Hi ead,

One way to do it would be to create a computed column on your dataSet that keeps a "runningcount" of the rows. Then you would just put a filter on the table with the condition of 'runningcount less than or equal params["paramName"]'. That should do it.

Take a look at this example. It was created in BIRT 2.2.2 with the sample database. You can see in the dataSet editor, the computed column I created. I then used a list box parameter to give the user options of how many rows they want to see and then used that value in a filter on the table.

You have this new data field called RowNum
Than you have put a new param for getting input NumRows

so than?

What happens is there is a computed column created in the dataSet to count the number of rows. When you create a table tied to this dataSet, this information for each row is also bound to the table, even if you don't display it. You then create a report parameter to ask the user how many rows they want to display. I set up a few values in the parameter list box, including a value for 'All', which I set the actual value of that to a million to be sure to cover all the rows. Then in a filter on the table, I set it up with the expression to show only rows where 'RowNum is less than or equal to param["NumRows"]'. So, whatever the user selects limits the table filter to only allow rows where the computed column value is less than the user specified parameter.
