Achiveing Pivot Table functionality in BIRT ...
Pass_BIRT
Greetings all,
I am trying to determine whether BIRT can achieve Pivot Table-like functionality similar to that offered by Excel. Failing that BIRT can't provide Pivot functionality would I best to somehow integrate with e.Spreadsheet to achieve this, as I understand e.Spreadsheet provides functionality similar to/equivalent to Excel's Pivot table functionality.
Thanks!

BIRT has the ability to build cross-tab tables which are the functional equivalent of pivot tables. Here is some background:<br />

Thanks for your reply - I do appreciate it!
Unfortunately, despite downloading the version of BIRT that I needed to open the .rptdesign file that you so kindly attached, I couldn't successfully load this file in either BIRT 2.1.2 or 2.1.0.
There's no chance you have a version that works in 2.1.2? I hope that's not asking too much.
At the end of the day, I am really interested to find out whether BIRT supports:
(i) true slice-and-dice, ie the ability to quickly and easily let users add/remove fields on a report
(ii) drill-down functionality, ie drill from summary down to detail
I'm hoping I don't have to use e.Spreadsheet Designer. Even though it's a great tool, e.Spreadsheet Designer has not been budgeted for!
Thanks!

You are using a pretty old version of BIRT. I believe cross-tab tables were supported as of BIRT version 2.2. The current release is 2.3. Can you upgrade to a later version? This should get you the functionality you are looking for.

Thanks for your reply.
You are right we're not working from the latest and greatest version of BIRT, but that's because we're integrating with a particular package that is currently only certified for BIRT 2.1.2.
In any case, I'm interested to look at this example you've given me, so I'll try it against the latest BIRT.
Thanks again.

All,
Further to the topic of achieving Pivot Table functionality in BIRT, I am reasonably satisfied that BIRT can sufficiently manage cross tabs which enables a BIRT report to have a "sort of" Pivot table look-and-feel. However, I do not think that BIRT provides a solution to the slice-and-dice feature, ie the feature that enables the easily addition/removal of fields from a report and then adds/removes rolled up summarised totals, e.t.c.
Am I correct??
Thanks in advance! This is really important to me!!!!
