Getting raw data set back only

Is there anyways that I can get the raw data set back only from the report engine or the birt-report viewer?

I'm trying to write a web service that wrap Birt Engine API and return a raw data set of the report and then format it to csv or anything I see fit. I know there is a EXCELRenderOption, but the return excel file is preformated. It makes it very hard for me to work with.

any ideas?
