Using cubes with the API

We'd like to query the results of a cube that has been defined in a report design
and pass those results to a front-end application where we will do our own formatting of the results.

Is there a way using the API to query the results on a cube?
Browsing the source I found a class "CubeQueryDefinition", is that what needs to be used?
Are there codesnippets available or some kind of documentation?
I understood that in previous versions BIRT was using a jolap implementation for the cubes, but I cannot find this implementation in the latest sources, has this been abandonned
