Birt with PHP application

Hi,

We are Delphi->Firebird Desktop C/S Database application developers.
We want to port one of our such application to web. Our Clients are
used to very nice reports with a previewer. For Client side of web application
we are going to use Flex and on server side we will be using PHP.
On both the selected technologies there is no good reporting facility.
Our search on web brought us here. We feel that BIRT can satisfy our need
of reporting but we have following doubts.

1. We want to remove all Stored Procedures from Database and put them as
Serverside PHP scripts which will be returning data. By this way we feel that
we can easily change the back-end RDBMS with minimum efforts. We would
like to whether BIRT can consume PHP web scripts data output ?

2. How can we call Birt transparently from flex application so that user can select
menu item in browser application and report is processed at server side and
user will get notification about either pdf, Text or XLS is ready so that he can
download from specific location on web server. Or a mail with report attachment
can be sent to user.

Since we are new to web development we dont know whether it can be done
or not but this is what we would like to have.
