How to pass the variable value to column

Actually,I have a dataset in my report having bussiness_unit field,I'm grouping on the business_unit field after that it shows 3grouped bussiness_unit values,I've to set 3 variables to that 3 bussiness_unit value .
so that after selecting first variable it'll show me first grouped business_unit values

I tried using the JS but its not working.can u explain me step by step instruction for that?

Where are you initializing your variables at? And what kind of variable are you using? var, persistentGlobalVariable, etc... Are you wanting to use these variables to compute another field? Or are you just wanting to display these values later? Or something else entirely?

Is there any way you can set up a report with the sample classic models database that I can run so I can be sure I understand your goal? Thanks.
