QuickStart Application not running completely

Hi, 
 
i have installed the Mashboard application and the QuickStart-Content. 
 
I can connect to the Application by using the url <a class='bbc_url' href='http://localhost:8700/iportal/mashboard.do?project=QuickStart'>http://localhost:8700/iportal/mashboard.do?project=QuickStart</a> 
 
Welcome-Page is running correctly, but the next three tabs are not. I get the error message: "Could not initialize Portal! Empty Portal Configuration!" 
 
I think, it is a problem with *.mashconfig-File. But i can't find any issues on this file. I have given all users all rigths for the mashboard-folder under ressources and the MashboardContent folder. 
 
What is my problem ? I have no idea, what I can do now.

Hi Lars,

When you gave users the rights to the folders, did you also assign rights tot he files inside the folders? Please check the security on the files themselves, it sounds like the files are not being loaded due to the security on them (or lack thereof)

thanks for your answer.

I have checked the security-settings.
For all folders and also for all files now I have set all rights (VSREWDG) for the All-Role.

But I get still the same Error message for tab 2,3 and 4. The other Tabs are working properly.

Do you have other suggestions ?

Can you outline your system configuration? Are you running iServer or iServer Express? What is the server's O/S?

I am running iServer V10 with Windows XP SP2 as O/S. The whole system (iServer, InformationConsole, BRD, IOD etc.) is installed on my local machine.

The issue is not with the mashconfig file. The mashconfig file is where the tabs themselves are defined, so the fact you are seeing the correct tabs tells me that file is configured correctly. 
 
The three tabs you are having trouble with are controlled via Global Canvases. Each canvas is defined via a mashcanvas file that is stored on the iServer alongside the mashconfig file. The authenticated user must have rights to these three files as well as the mashconfig file in order to have the canvas load correctly. The three files are: 
 
<ul class='bbc'><li>BlankCanvas.mashcanvas (Tab 2)</li><li>SalesDB.mashcanvas (Tab 3)</li><li>NewsDB.mashcanvas (Tab 4)</li></ul>
 
You can also choose to remove the canvas definition from the tab itself. In the mashconfig file, you wiull find a tab defined with the following XML snippet:

<navItem label="My Dashboard" id="nav4">
<body urlType="shared" url="portal.jsp?canvasName=Blank&canvasType=global"/>
</navItem>
</pre>
 
You can change it to: 
<pre class='_prettyXprint _lang-auto _linenums:0'>

<navItem label="My Dashboard" id="nav4">
<body urlType="shared" url="portal.jsp"/>
</navItem>
</pre>
 
After changing it you will need to re-deploy the mashconfig file to the iServer to load your changes. 
 
I would not change the mashconfig file until we verify the mashcanvas files are deployed and configured properly.

thanks for your post.

First I have checked the settings for the .mashcanvas-files.
They are located at my ressources-folder and the all-role has all rights on this files. This is the same folder as the mashconfig file is located. Is this correct ?

After this I changed my mashconfig file. I changed the entry for the 2nd tab as you described:

<navItem label="My Dashboard" id="nav4">
<body urlType="shared" url="portal.jsp"/>
</navItem>
After this I published the file again to the iServer, login to the application, but (sorry) I get the same error.

All of your files need to be located in "/Resources/mashboard/QuickStart". You mentioned your files were in your resources folder, so I wanted to confirm this path is indeed where you deployed everything.

This is right, all files are located in this folder (Resources/mashboard/QuickStart), all files are deployed in this folder.

That error gets generated when the "Dashboard" tab is initialized. This is a client side javascript generated error, which basically says the Mashboard AJAX servlet did not return data (or generated an error).

Please ensure your web.xml file has the servlet defined like this:

<servlet>
<servlet-name>MashboardAJAXServlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>com.actuate.mashboard.ajax.MashboardServlet</servlet-class>
</servlet>

and your web.xml file will also need to have the servlet mapping defined like this:

<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>MashboardAJAXServlet</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/servlet/ajax/mashboard</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>

but my WEB.xml file was set like that and
it is still not work.

perharps you have an idea:
my problem is if i put a fake name
for login into the welcome page i have got
the iportal with the following message:
could not retrieve volume name.

the first widget at the top of the login page
does not exists it is like the volume was not started.

i am afraid the information between the mashboard welcome page and the iportal login page is not passing correctly?

any idea?

The problem was the missing entries in web.xml.
