Dynamic number of drill-downs

Hello!

I need to design a couple of BIRT reports showing business data in (bar-)charts. I've been doing fine so far, but now I have the following problem:
There is a report which shows the cost of business processes. Any of these processes can but doesn't have to have a number of sub-processes, which also can have sub-processes. You have to be able to drill down as deep as you like and unfortunately, I do not know in advance how many sub-processes there will be, since the number will differ from project do project.
Is it possible to set up a dynamic drill-down? I would greatly appreciate any help.

Thank you for your interest in helping me. I've solved the drill-down problem, but now a another one occured. First of all, I'll try to illustrate the structure of my data again.

It is about projects which have, of course, a name. The projects have a certain number of tasks, having attributes like name and cost. Now it gets a little tricky: Any task can have a number of sub-tasks, which can have sub-tasks as well. Everything is presented as a bar-chart.

The structure (I'm currently using an xml-datasource) looks like this:

project-title - task-title - cost - parent-task - has-children
world champion studying 45 null false
world champion training 230 null true
world champion buy gear 100 training false
world champion running 10 training false
world champion sweating 15 training true
world champion losing weight 40 sweating false
world champion relaxing 50 null false
project 2 task2 222 null false
project 2 anotherTask 10 null false

This might help to understand:
- studying
- training
...- buy gear
...- running
...- sweating
.......- losing weight
- relaxing

The desired chart interactivity is:
First you see the available projects. On the x-axis is the title on the y-axis is the summed-up costs. When you click on a project-bar you a taken to a chart with all the tasks that the clicked project contains. The task-title on the x-axis and the cost on the y-axis. (Up to here it works fine)

Now, if you click on a task, that does not have sub-tasks you are taken to a certain URL, where you get more Information about the task (I somehow need to pass the task-name to that URL). If you clicked a task, which has sub-tasks, you just drill on and on and on, until you finally click a task, which doesn't have subtasks.

How do I do that? I'm pretty sure I'll have to script this, but I couldn't find out how.

Maybe I'm not quite understanding correctly, but couldn't you just pass the task name as a parameter through the drill-down?

that's correct, at the top layer I'm passing the name of the clicked project as a parameter and filter (in the DataSet menu) the view by saying: show all tasks where project-title=params["passedParameter"].value.
Then my problem starts:
After the first click I see all tasks belonging to the previously clicked project. When now I click a task that has sub-tasks I apply a filter saying "show all tasks where the parent task=clicked task", which returns the sub tasks of the clicked one.
The problem is: The tasks which don't have sub-tasks shall take the user to a certain URL. Roughly said, the solution should be something like

if(clickedtask.hasSubtasks){
drilldown to subtasks;
}
else{
open URL;
}

But how and where is this possible?

I'll have to look into doing this off of a chart. I have a suggestion that would work if you were using tables, but I haven't done anything like this for a chart. If I figure something out, I'll let you know in here.

Take a look at the enclosed example that allows for multiple levels of dynamic drill-down. In this example, there is one summary report that charts the projects. When you click on a chart piece, it takes you to a task chart that lists the subtasks. If you happened to have clicked on a task that does not have any subtasks, then the visibility property is used to show the task details instead. Otherwise, the subtasks are charted. If you click on a chart piece within this second report, it runs the same report again with this new subtask as a parameter. This can go as many levels as there is data.

That was a really nice architecture. However, can you please elaborate how you achieved turning off visibility of chart for non-subtask objects??
 
And, you are only sending "Parent-task" parameter from master report to child report and not hasChildren property. How does the report know that the Task does not have sub-task.??
 
I checked the Report Events, but could not find anything other than "checked-out=0" and table visibility set using condition (checked-out>0). Your reports are exactly what I need, however not able to replicate in my reports.
