BIRT- report layout elements positioning

Hello everyone- I have a query related to the BIRT report designer. When I tried to create a report in the RCP designer, it only allowed me to place the controls one below the other. For e.g. If I have to place a label to the right of a chart, I cannot do it- I have to first place a grid with rows and columns and only then can I place controls side by side- within those columns. This is a big hurdle in using the tool to design reports as I wish. Is there any way I can design a report freely? Am I missing out anything? Please help me out.
