canvas in a viewer?

I am trying to create a histogram plug-in. It works fine when I only have a few bars. However for 3+ bars, I get this:

Unable to render too many steps. Please adjust the Scale Step or Unit.

Can you view the report fine outside the context of the Mashboard? I want to narrow down the source of the error (the report or the Mashboard Framework) before we dig deeply into debugging.
