use of variables in birt

hi all
i have a dataset which displays a list of subjects..it has only one coulmn..
like....|sub_code|
as8
as5
as7
now i want to dynamically assign these values to 3 columns in a grid.
Do i need to put the values of |sub_code| in a variable and then call each one of them ?..if its the correct procedure please guide me through that..

One way to do this is to tie the dataset to a hidden table before the grid and when each row is processed put the dataset value in a global array. Then in the grid assign the values to the global array. See attached example.
