newbie in BIRT over sql server db

Hi there:
I am pretty new to BIRT and have some entry-level questions...
1. I am trying to set up my dev. env...
when I hit the test connection... in the edit datasource... it prompts the
error message saying i/o error, db connection closed...

anyone has any ideas?
