Passing data around

I am seeking if there is a way to pass data around using ReportContext in order to retrieve the data from a Custom Java Handler via a ReportContext. I am wondering if there is a way to call a method outside of BIRT to add something to the ReportContext in order to retrieve? I have looked around to see if there is a utility class that can provide me access to the ReportContext. Please let me know. What I am using right now is ThreadLocal in order to get my object from the Custom Data Handler.
