Howto pass Object as Report Parameter

I've just tried to upgrade to birt 2.5.1 from 2.2.2. Previously we were passing java object as a parameter. It's seems in the new version parameter values are checked and fail if they don't match the datatype specified. Surely you should be able to pass an Object in as a parameter. The designer only gives simple types as options string/date/number etc. Is there any way this could be done?
Prehaps by specifying your own datatypes that the designer should allow as a parameter?
