visualformatter and hex values

I am having a problem when I enter ASCII character codes into visualformatter. When I generate a page that I am using ASCII codes in, and I have the visualFormatter in source view, the page generates fine and the ASCII codes are left in the page. However, when I switch from source view to presentation view and I generate my page, the ASCII codes are stripped out. Any ideas why?

When I say ASCII code, I mean “ (I may not be using the correct term).
