Problem exporting a report in MS Word format

I'm having trouble getting my report to export in the MS Word (doc) format. When I reneder the report in the doc format it opens the document in MS Word but, it also shows the XML tags. Any idea what could be causing this. Attached is an example of this using the BIRT sample report that came with the BIRT report viewer. I'm using version 2.3.2.2 of the report viewer. I'm also using MS Word 97. I have a feeling the problem may be with the version of MS Word I am using.

The MS Word format from BIRT is in Office 2003 format so wont be able to be viewed in MS Word 97. If you had Office 2000 or higher, then there are compatibility packs at <a class='bbc_url' href='http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923505'>http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923505</a> that allow older versions of Word open the newer formats.
