I have this message on firefox, chrome after dialog with report parameters. IE doesn't show me report parameter dialog - only empty page. 
 
Interesting thing is that I have 2 applications on one Tomcat. They differs only in properties file (language versions) with unimportant keys for birt. 
The first one is ok, the second has the message after trying to generate reports. 
 
I tryied to use instead "frameset" servlet "run" and it runs. But primary it's work of BirtViewer to use correct servlet. 
 
I have BIRT 2.5.1 
 
Maybe something is wrong with Tomcat 6.0.18. I restarted it and problems are still. 
 
Does have any sollution?

Sollution is very easy. After deploying application on Tomcat delete files in Tomcat "work" directory (there are compiled jsp classes).
I changed BIRT version 2.3 to 2.5.1 and it has a little different jsp pages. The old versions stays in "work" directory. I think it's problem of tomcat which doesn't recognize newer jsp pages version.

In my case it didn't help.
However my symptoms were different:
- BIRT not upgraded (still 2.3.2)
- problem appearing after some time of viewing report
- problem appearing in Firefox, not present in IE

I'm sorry. I looked in birt viewer source and saw on about 4 places this message. So I agree the effect is the same but reasons are different.

Ok, that's fine.
I haven't thought about looking into the source before (shame).
This time I have downloaded sources and found the string (as you've said) under the following names:
public static final String GENERAL_ERROR_NO_VIEWING_SESSION = "birt.viewer.error.noviewingsession";
birt.viewer.error.noviewingsession=The viewing session is not available or has expired.
in some places.
It is generally used in the following code construct:
ViewingSessionUtil.getSession( request );

But that was not enough to process further.

Today I encountered the same "The viewing session is not available or has expired." message again. Some months ago I managed to find a solution (see this <a class='bbc_url' href='http://www.birt-exchange.org/org/forum/index.php/topic/15211-the-viewing-session-not-available/page__view__findpost__p__60445'>post</a>). 
 
This time the issue was a bit different: it only happened when the reports were accessed from IE, but not from Firefox and only for some of them. Looking at the differences I saw that for some of the reports the URL included the hostname and for the others the IP address of the Tomcat server. The ones that were failing to be displayed were the ones accessed by IP. 
 
So you could check how you are accessing the reports and how the URL is specified. In my case using the hostname of the machine hosting the Tomcat did the trick.
