How closely tied is the crosstab to the Birt cube? That is, is it possible to have a crosstab that gets data from an external cube?

The crosstab gets its data from a BIRT Data Cube. The Data Cube gets its data from a BIRT Data Set, which can come from lots of places. Currently, there is not a BIRT data driver to go after external cubes in the open source version of the BIRT Designer, however, if you are getting at that cube data another way, like though a web service, or through Java then you can create a BIRT data source to one of those.
