iDataExtraction interface

Hi,
I wish to take data from a birt report and store it in a csv file. I cannot get a csv emitter working so I am trying to take data using the iDataExtraction interface. I'm just wondering if anyone else has used this for this purpose and how they went about doing it? - Is this an external program that is run or is it run in BIRT itself?
