perplexing issue

All,

What is the best method for applying data capture records (DCR's) to new DCT's. We have a whole whack of old DCR's, and we have since changed out DCT. What is the "best practice" way to update the old DCR's so they are associated with the new DCT. Support has not provided much, and there is no documentation on the issue.

Is the DCT named the same thing and in the same directory?
Are the changes to the structure of the resulting xml?

A few things to look into:
You will need to "update" (somehow) the extended attributes to point to the new DCT. I know there is documentation on that. Check the CMD lines.

If you have significantly changed the structure of the DCT, look into writing a TPL that would build new XML files (essentiallyyour new DCRs), then apply the extended attributes.

Here's what I'd do.
1) save a new DCR so you can figure out the difference in the old and new DCRs' XML formats.
2) Write a perl script to read the old DCR, write the new format DCR, and then set the extended attributes to
to point at the new DCT.

I've had to take HTML files, and chop out their <TITLE>s and <BODY>s to insert into a hand rolled DCR (two fields, TITLE and BODY),
so we could make a templatified HTML editor using VisualFormat. Since HTML is like XML's cousin, the similarities work in your favor.
You shoudl be able to use a nice big, gnarly regexp to do most of the translation work for you.

The other poster's idea of using a TPL to generate the new DCR is interesting, but I wonder how TeamSIte would react when
it encounters a file with extended attributes saying that it is DCR of foo/bar data type, but is also a file generated by barfoo.tpl,
from bizzbuzz.dcr.

good point. would have to look into removing the extended attributes first.

I have thought about that hand-rolled dcr thing before. I guess the downside it the template is pretty free-form. Kinda loose a lot of the templating / xml benefits with visual format. But sometimes that is the only option.

We do it for number of reasons. The biggest IMO are not having to deal with the HTML that Word produces, and not having
to buy licenses for FrontPage or Dreamweaver for people who just want to manipulate paragraphs of text and maybe change a font face and color of a heading.
