Report Variable Initialization

All - I Have the following script in my "Initialize" event of the report, and I have a variable called "tolerance" set to 1.0000001.

When I try to test or set the variable in the initialize event - the script fails.

I have the following in the initialize:

importPackage( Packages.java.io );
fos = new java.io.FileOutputStream( "c:logFile.txt" );
printWriter = new java.io.PrintWriter( fos );
printWriter.println( "ReportDesign.initialize" );

vars["tolerance"] = 2.5;

this crashes the report - so it seems that the variable does not exist yet... Can anyone help me ? What am I doing wrong ?

Hi Dean,

Why not set the default value of the variable in the Report Variable Editor?

It's not setting of the default value that is the problem. I need to access the variable in the Initialize event, and It seems not to exist. The code I have in the post of for illustrative purposes only...

That seems to be correct. It doesn't look like the report variables are available until after the beforeFactory method in the report. In 2.5.2, I get the actual error, "Report Variable does not exist". What exactly are you trying to achieve? Maybe I can suggest an alternative solution.

A bit of a long story, but I am converting a suite of reports (about 50) to 2.5.1 from 2.1.2, and in the old version, report variables did not exist. So I just set all variables in the initialize events of the reports when I needed them (lots of totaling across sub-reports & such) Looks like I will go back to setting persistent variables in java script when I need them... Many thanks!
