column width

If I create a BIRT report from scratch, it's easy to drag the column width back and forth. If I create a Maximo report, dragging the column width doesn't do anything.

Is there a way around this?

what do u mean dragging the collumn doesn't do anything?
do mean that when u run the report in Maximo u do not see the effect of the column width you choose? if so that is normal at least in my experience.
within the Birt designer, i usually have to select the column and give it a fixe width in mm, inch or % for it to take effect when i run it in maximo. I found that the best result is achieved when i use % as the unit in birt.

If I'm using the BIRT Maximo templates, then I try to move the column widths in the LAYOUT, they don't stay changed. I can even reduce the size of the MASTER PAGE, but when I go to LAYOUT, the report takes up more room than the MASTER PAGE.

Try it - go to the MASTER PAGE and change the width to 3". Then look at the LAYOUT.
