Why can't I call a javascrip function in dataSet.beforeOpen

A dataSet with a beforeOpen that calls a piece of javascript in another library works fine normally, but when I reference the dataSet as part of a cascading property group it fails:

Error evaluating Javascript expression. Script engine error: ReferenceError: "myTestMethod" is not defined.
