Problem Upgrading 2.3.0 to 2.5.2

A report that has been running under BIRT 2.3.0 for a long while does not run correctly under 2.5.2 - rows in a table that should not be visible according to a simple rule (row["Date"] < row["FromDate"]) now appear in the report. I have tested the report and it runs correctly in Preview of the current Eclipse Report Designer. I have checked that the *.jar files are correctly updated in Eclipse and in the Tomcat WEB-INF/lib directory. 
 
The versions in use are: 
Eclipse BIRT Reporting Tools: Version: 2.5.0.v20090607-9ODS6GD7wmMtz-DbWuHKMt_6VlSF Build id: v20090617-0630 
 
BIRT Runtime: <a class='bbc_url' href='http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/birt/downloads/drops/R-R1-2_5_2-201002221500/birt-runtime-2_5_2.zip'>Eclipse downloads - mirror selection</a> 
 
Has anyone else had a similar problem, and what should I look for?

Further to my post I have tested several versions of the BIRT Report Engine:

2.5.0 - works as expected - with some PDF page throw oddities
2.5.1, 2.5.2, 2.6.0 - have the problem described before - but have no page throw problems!

What am I doing wrong?

Can you recreate this issue with the sample database where the report runs correctly in 2.5.0, but not in later versions so that I can run and test on the report? Thanks.

I am not sure what you need to investigate the above issue further.

However, it is academic a we now have had to roll back all the way to BIRT 2.3.0 because 2.5.0 generates PDF reports (that have been running for over two years) that are of unlimited size (in excess of 2GB for a report that should be about 20KB).

How critical is it to use matched versions of the BIRT Designer and Engine?

I have fixed the problem described above by changing the rule:

row["Date"] < row["FromDate"]

to:

BirtComp.lessThan(row["Date"], row["FromDate"])

The first rule worked up to the BIRT Engine 2.5.0, and continues to work in the BIRT Designer preview mode.
