print STDERR fails in TPL

WIthin the tpl, we have the following statement....

<iw_perl><![CDATA[
print STDERR "test error\n";
]]></iw_perl>

I get the following error when I execute regen from command line...

Scalar found where operator expected at (eval 31) line 185, at end of line
(Missing operator before ?)
test error

Any ideas why this might be happening...

We are using Teamsite 5.5.2 on Solaris
