[Charting] Create chart with timeperiods grouped by days

Hi, 
 
I'd like to have a chart with an overview of certain periods grouped by days. Therefore I have a dataset with 3 columns (startdate(DATETIME), enddate(DATETIME), duration(INT)). In Excel I have the possibility to create a bar chart which looks like the following.

But I was not able to get this working in the BIRT-Designer. The only thing I got working was in a Java application, using the Chart-API directly by creating dynamic value-series on a gantt chart, which felt like a hack

Can you give me some hints how to create such a chart with a minimal of scripting effort? - Or probably you can give me some scripting-hints.

I think this does what you're wanting. It uses just a little scripting in the chart editor. I changed your data format a little, so use the file in the zip folder. The computed columns are just to make the date strings you provided into actual date objects, so you can disregard them. Let me know if you have questions.

If you look at the csv you'll find multiple durations for one day, e.g. 
 
03.04.2010 01:38,03.04.2010 18:52,1034 
03.04.2010 19:57,04.04.2010 00:00,243 
 
the diagram generates 2 items on the y-axis which is not the preferred behavior. There must be two durations in one row, which is IMHO only possible if you have 2 value series. There must be something like n Value series for n durations per day. 
 
I was only able to implement this behavior directly in Java working on the org.eclipse.birt.chart.model.data.GanttDataSet data model. There must be something similar in BIRT Scripting...

Ah. Sorry. I guess I didn't pay close enough attention to the dates being different. I'll see if there's something else I can do, but now that I see the issue, I'm thinking the way you already did is probably going to be the best way. This would probably be a good feature to add for an enhancement request for later versions. Adding some advanced grouping that would allow for separate blocks on a line in a group. You can submit enhancements at http://www.birt-exchange.org/org/resources/bug-reporting/.

I am looking for the discussed feature and did not find any other topic in this forum. So the question is, did the situation improved since the last birt version ?

Is it now possible to display several tasks on one line using the group statement ? => I tried unsuccessfully, so i was wondering if someone has a solution.

What i am trying to do ?
- to display leaves of my team for the whole year
- my data:

I don't believe any changes have been made to the charts to add this functionality. I'll try in the most recent version and see if there is something that can be done. You can file an enhancement request at the following site:

You could also download the source for BIRT and modify the Gantt chart to have this functionality.

Update: If you group the category by day instead of hours and then use optional y-series grouping, you can get the separate bars of the Gantt chart to show on a single line. To get them all to be the same color again, you'd just have to set the color in script.
