How to fill a list

I created a report with a chart. Because i wanted to modify my chart, i wrote a script (onRender).<br />
<br />
it shows like this:<br />

listNew = 0;


function afterDataSetFilled( series, dataSet, icsc )
{
importPackage(Packages.org.eclipse.birt.chart.model.attribute.impl);

...

var i=1;
listNew.add(i);

}

function beforeGeneration( chart, icsc )
{
...

for(i=0; i<listNew.length; i=i+1){
target_ml = listNew[i];
}
}

The listNew will never be filled with datas. Why?
