Use Data Sets for Single Values?

If I'm querying a database to pull a single column from a single row, do I need to save this as its own data set? Conceptually, am I just getting a very small set or is there a different mechanism for this sort of a retrieval? Some insight into the matter would be greatly appreciated

A Stored Procedure with output parameter is the other way.
A unique DataSet with specific SQL query is much easier to deal with.
