Why do tables only bind to one dataset?

I've hit a roadblock designing a sales receipt and I could really use some assistance. I have a table which does a great job printing out the basic information (price, description, quantity) from a dataset "order" for my receipt. The problem is that beneath the detail rows where this information is printed, I need to add single item costs such as shipping and tax before calculating a grand total. I don't think it makes sense to include these values in my existing dataset since they are single values, but since the table can only be bound to one dataset, I can't drag these values into my table footer. Hi Rhall,

You could embed a table or data item that is bound to the dataSet that has that information in it and filter its contents based on the outer table with the detail information.

In certain situations I store data in a global variable (reportContext.setGlobalVariable("","")). I dont know if that is the best solution for your problem.

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions! I think I've resolved myself to just alter the query and left join the data, even if it is a bit redundant.

Hi BUBU,

If you're using a single dataSource, could you not do the join in your sql to create just one dataSet? If you're able to join your data in your SQL, your report would run more efficiently than doing the join in BIRT. If you're not using a JDBC dataSource, then you're probably stuck with the join in BIRT. I'll take a look at the report and let you know what I see.

You should be able to use a joint dataSet with a JDBC dataSource. I'm not sure why it's not working for you. You'd have to recreate your issue with the sample, classic models, database to show me how you're setting up the join so I can see where the issue might be. Here is a link to a devShare post that shows how to do an embedded table with dataSet parameter binding. It might be your best option if you're doing a master/detail type report with two dataSets.

Hello Michael,

I am looking to put three data sets into one table. I know I can embed tables within tables, but I want to give the appearance of one singular table with a border as my attachement from Word shows. Please let me know how this is possible.

If you just want them to appear as if they're in one table, you should only need to put the tables one after another in your design. There should be no space between them. You'll just need to make sure the column widths are the same and that you handle the borders for the top of one table and the bottom of another. If you have both set, the border will appear much thicker than the rest.
