birt-runtime and custom items

Hello BIRT Community,

I m trying to execute my custom rptdesign-file in a simple java program similar like the examples listed on http://wiki.eclipse.org/Integration_Examples_(BIRT)

My report is using at the moment two custom items and is works fine when using the report designer (The plugins for the custom items are placed in the eclipse_install/plugins folder).

But when I m trying to execute the rptdesign-design file from my simple java class the custom items are ignored without errors (I m using birt-runtime-2_6_0).

The custom items plugins are placed in the environment of the Result Engine, in birt-runtime-2_6_0\ReportEngine\plugins, but somehow they are not used for creating the report.

Any suggestion or hints?

Are you setting BIRT home on the engine config? Also you may want to clear the reportengine/configuration directory except for the config.ini and try again.

Also clearing the configuration folder haven't helped. :mellow:

Did you export the plugins in plugin format?

Hi Jason,

I exported the projects as "Deployable plug-ins and fragments".

In eclipse Helios the plugins are working fine only with the birt-runtime-2_6_0 they are ignored.

Hello Jason,

For better understanding of my problem I have uploaded some files in a zip:

1. java file for creating the simple report.
2. the rotated text tutorial2 as plugin
3. simple rptdesign-file where the roatedText is used.

What you need to do is:
- to set the path of birt in the java file,
- to set the path of the rptdesign-file that I m sending you in the java file and
- copy the plug-in in the report engine plugin folder.

After executing only the normal text is created in the report's and not the rotated one.

For some reasons the export to HTML is giving some errors (null pointer exceptions) so I commented this out.

I hope this helps for testing.

The issue here is that the plugin manifest contains requirements for ui plugins that do not exist in the runtime. I thought this was fixed in the sample, but obvisouly not. Can you log a bug for this? To work around the issue just take them out of the manifest.mf file in the deployed engine version of the plugin. Here is the revised manifest.mf

Hi Jason,
thank you for the hint.

Does that means that after I tested my custom item in the report designer I need to "translate" the item to some runtime friendly version by deleting parts of it?

Because if I delete the dependencies I am missing packages/functions and then I get errors in my plugin project.

I have also tired to copy the missing plugins (org.eclipse.birt.report.designer.core, org.eclipse.birt.report.designer.ui.views, org.eclipse.birt.report.designer.ui, org.eclipse.jface, org.eclipse.ui.forms) from the eclipse plugin folder to the report engine runtime plugin folder but that changes nothing. I hoped that way the items will be rendered but I was wrong.

Kosta,

Do not remove them from your project. These ui plugins are needed for it to work in the designer. Just remove them from the runtime version of the plugin. Can you open a bug for this as well?

I had little problems with the manifests but it works now.

I 'll report this problem on the eclipse BIRT bugzilla.

Hi, I had this problem too and I'll add this for further reference.

Each dependency might by marked as "optional". In plugin manifest editor open Dependencies tab, select required plug-in, cick "Properties..." and check "Optional".
Plug-in is still in the development classpath, but it is not required in runtime.

I had to "optionalize" all *.report.designer.* plugins and *.ui.* plugin dependencies
