Visual Formatting with EditLive! for Java

I wish to integrate Ephox EditLive! for Java with Interwoven TeamSite Templating so that I may offer users cross platform Visual Formatting options. However, I cannot see how to access the VisualFormatting functionality for this. Does anyone know of an API which will allow me to seemlessly integrate this software?
Failing this can anyone tell me how to create my own custom object/item that I can allow users to include in a template which they develop?

Just as a note, EditLive! for Java is a Java Applet not a JavaBean, which means that a Java Callout cannot readily be used.
