Error When Previewing Data Set

I am trying to create a chart where the x-axis and the grouping are set using parameters, similar to the reports in this article:

I have two questions: 
 
1. The code uses the "replaceAll" javascript function. I am not able to get the data set to work correctly with the script when I try using the replaceAll function. I am having trouble finding information about the replaceAll function. The replace function seems to be working for me. Where can I find out more information about the replaceAll function? 
 
2. I have added the script on the beforeOpen for the data set bound to the chart. If I run the report, the report seems to be working correctly. When I preview the data set, an error message pops up: "Error happened while running the report." If a click on the Details button, part of the message displayed is "SQL statement does not return a ResultSet object. SQL error #1: Incorrect syntax near ')'." 
 
Does the script I added not run when I preview the data set? Could that be why I am getting an error when I preview the data set, but not when I run the report?

For #1, if simply using replace works for you, I wouldn't worry about the replaceAll function.

For #2, What is your BIRT version? In 2.6.1, if I change the query in the beforeOpen from an unusable query to a correct one, I don't get any errors. If you're using an older version, this could possibly have been a bug or you have a parameter value or variable that you're using that is not set til you run the report, so your script doesn't create a correct query.

Thank you for answering my questions. I am wondering why the code in the article uses the replaceAll function and I do not get an error when I preview that data set, but I do get an error when I use the replace function and preview the data set. I am using BIRT version 2.6.1.

Oh, you don't get an error with the replaceAll function, but you do with the replace function? Is there more than one instance of the string that you're trying to replace? If so, the replace function may only replace the first instance of it and the second instance is left and causes the error.
