Visual Formatting with EditLive! for Java

I wish to integrate Ephox EditLive! for Java with Interwoven TeamSite Templating so that I may offer users cross platform Visual Formatting options. However, I cannot see how to access the VisualFormatting functionality for this. Does anyone know of an API which will allow me to seamlessly integrate this software? Just as a note, EditLive! for Java is a Java Applet not a JavaBean, which means that a Java Callout cannot readily be used.

Failing this can anyone tell me how to create my own custom object/item that I can allow users to include in a template which they develop?
