Internationalization for a date

Hi,
I ve got some problems with the translation for a date. I would to format the date like that
for locale french : 19 octobre 2010
for locale us : october 19, 2010
Using <value-of format='dd MM YYYY'>date()</value-of> i ve got a translation but it keeps the format specified :
for locale french : 19 octobre 2010
for locale us : 19 october 2010
Do you know what i can use to format my date as i want and have a good translation whatever the language? Thx

How many locales do you need to represent? Just french and US? If so, you could use simple script to change the date format to how you want it for each.
