Pagination and Table Grouping Issue : To improve the Performance
Aarti
Hi,
We have designed a report by using table grouping. We have also used pagination by giving page break after 4 tables. The data is such that, the table is generated 8800 times. The report performance is badly hampered in case of huge amount of data. In fact the report is not rendered at all in case of huge amount of data. The report is rendered fast if amount of data is small. We think that this performance issue is either because of the way BIRT table grouping is implemented or because the client is trying to render all data. We had used another BI tool previously and had observed that it had a facility to render only first page of data on the client side and then subsequent pages as requested.
We would like to know if there is any way by which instead of fetching all the data at once and presenting in the pagination format, the report can only fetch records page by page to reduce the burden on the client side and improve the performance.
Please let us know if anybody has faced similar issue and has found a solution or work-around for the same.

Hi Aarti,
What is your dataSource type? JDBC? If so, are you using parameter binding for your embedded tables or filters? There can be a large performance slow down if you use filters. Let me know.
If you have a row number field in your database, you could create a drill through that works similarly to a paginated report passing a parameter for row numbers. Some SQL databases allow you to limit your rows retrieved in SQL, so you could also script the limits in your query and use a drill though to "paginate" your report.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. The datasource type that we are using is JDBC. We have used paramter binding for our embedded tables and also filters.
As you said that there can be a large performance slow down if we use filters, so is there any other alternative for filters.
Can you also suggest an alternative for table grouping?
Thanks and Regards,
Aarti

In what cases are you using filters instead of using the parameter binding? I don't know that you'll have another way to do grouping. Which database type are you using? Some have different ways of calling certain lines of the resultset. Using this, you could set up your own previous/next buttons that called the next page of results through a drill down.
