Using Birt reports with CQ Windows client and web client

Hi all,
as we need to migrate all current Crystal Reports we're using with CQ 7.1, we are investigating Birt as a possible replacement option.
My questions: our users work with either the CQ Windows client or the Web Client. Can Birt reports be invoked from both? I tried to import the report format into both clients (as used to when working with Crystal reports), but this did not work.
Any hints or related links?
