Limiting row height

I'm trying to figure out how to make sure a table row that has a data item in one of its columns that may potentially have a large amount of text in it does not grow vertically beyond a certain height. Is this possible with Birt?
Alternatively is it possible to set the height of a row to an absolute value and instruct the row to collapse vertically when there is white space?

What do you want to do with the extra text?
It may be easier to truncate the data value after a certain number of characters or newlines (\r\n).

The report layouts are being created on the fly by our ad-hoc reporting system, and we leave facilities to modify the reports that are created with the Designer, so I sort of want to keep the data intact to allow for customization by the end user. They may decide that for a particular report they want more or all of that data displayed.
I have to believe that Birt has some facility for the maximum allowable size of a report's various components.
