Two or More Numbers of Graph in a Same Chart.

Hi All,

Greetings. One of My use cases states that, I have to create a Chart which is consisting two or more kinds of graphs like Line graph, Area graph using BIRT. I have tried to draw a Chart as per my requirement (Though my Drawing skills are bad

) in Paint and attached it here for your reference.

Please help me in this implementation. Thanks in Advance.

Hi Uddipan,

You can use multiple chart types within a single chart with BIRT. All you have to do is add extra y-series' in your select data tab. After you have selected your data for all your different series', when you click next it will take you to the series section of the formatting tab. Here you will see the different series' you have for the chart and there will be drop downs next to them allowing you to change the chart type. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. It?s truly appreciating. It worked. But with this solution I am facing one new problem. My new problem is "How to select data from Different Datasets in a Chart". Because data of other chart types I wanted to show in the chart is coming from different Datasets.

Here I have tried to Use Joined Data Set also. After joining two datasets, it?s showing output in its preview area. But it is not showing any Columns While I am trying to use it by any Chart or any Table.

The joint dataSet is going to be the way to go here. I haven't seen this issue before. Is there any way you can reproduce it with a report that uses the sample database?

Thanks for Quick reply. Actually In this moment I am working in Secure Environment, so it?s not possible for me to create a sample data and report. Sorry for this. But I will surely try to provide you one example of this from my Home PC

Let me detail the Issue of Joint Data Set for your better understanding. If I am creating A Joint dataset which is joining two Data Sets without any parameter (Reporting Parameters), It is working as expected. I can use it from Charts and tables.

But if I am trying to create a Joint Data set which is joining two Data Sets with at least one parameter, it?s not working. Then it is showing all Data on Preview tab of the Edit Data Set Window. But I cannot use it, neither in tables nor charts. (Normally if we are having any Data Set, We can expand it by clicking "+" sign to see the Columns in it, at Data Explorer. But in this case "+" sign is also not coming).

Hope this will clear the scenario somewhat. Thanks again for your time.

There is a sample database that you can try to reproduce this with and attach it when you have a chance. I'll give it a try as well, creating a joint dataSet out of two dataSets that use parameters and then try to drop the dataSet into the design as a table.

I see what you're saying now. I had forgotten about this issue. It remained a problem until BIRT 2.6.0. If you can upgrade, it for sure works with that version. Otherwise, if you're using SQL, you can do your union in your query rather than with a joint dataSet.

I have faced another problem while working with it. Let me detail that problem also. I have a use case where I have to show Some Category With its Value in a Bar chart. Value will be "Y axis" and Category will be "X axis". Now I have to group those Categories with Month Name. I am getting all this three values(Category, Category Value and Month Name) from dataset I have created. For Grouping My Categories Using Month Name I am Using "Optional Y Series Grouping" feature of BIRT. In my use case It is possible to have same category name with different or same values, in Different Months.(Example: In March and February both I can have Car as a category with Value of 7 or 8)

Now When I am grouping it with "Optional Y Series grouping" with Month name, It is grouping with Month Name. I can see Different Color Bars for different Month categories. But the Problem It is Also grouping the Same Categories, in Different Months. The Same Categories across different Months are coming as Side by Side Bar.
But As My Use case I want all categories should be separate, only grouping By Month.

I have tried to draw what is Coming After "Optional Y Series grouping" and What is my requirement as per my Use Case.

After "Optional Y Series grouping" Its Coming Like:

What you're wanting is more like putting the month on the x-axis and using the vehicle type as the optional grouping. Your legend won't be as you want it with the months, but the months will now display on the x-axis, so it should be ok. The different vehicle types will now be colored to match each other across months. Hope this helps.

Yes, that?s true. But actually I have lot of Categories (Vehicle type) to show. So it will not Look Good (Lots of Legend will be there, so will create some Confusion). For this reason I took the Previous Strategy. Is there any way around?

There might be an easier way to do it, but you could simply hide the legend, color the bars how you'd like in script and create your own "legend" next to the chart using a grid and labels.
