Birt Report Designer DataSet behaviour
alponse
Hi , i'm using birt report designer and i have some questions :
1- Did birt run a dataset's query for a hidden element ( a table for exp)?
2- if yes how can i disable this behaviour ?
( following a condition , i can put in a variable the state of a table ( visible or not) in the report)
3- if a data set is used by two table or more in the report, did birt execute the query one time?
.
Thanks in advance,
Alphonse

Hi Alphonse,
1. Yes, a query is ran for a hidden table. This way you still have access to the data that was hidden. If you want to not show something based on a parameter, the best solution is to drop the element from the report in the beforeFactory method.
2. Again, if you're just hiding, the query will be ran. If you know if you want to show/hide the table early enough, dropping it is the best solution.
3. In newer versions of BIRT, the query should only be ran once in this scenario. In an older version, 2.2 and before, the query probably would run multiple times.
Hope this helps.

Hi mwilliams,
thanks a lot for your answers. My probleme is that i can't check if some tables will be hidden before building the report. In the middle of this one , i have a dataset which will be executed and its result is stocked in a variable. This process is repeated times in the report and with that i can hide tables or grids.
So using beforeFactory is useless in this scenario.
I read a topic here which describe how birt works :
http://www.eclipse.org/birt/phoenix/deploy/reportScripting.php
What i want ,is to tell birt (report designer) that for a dataset , it musn't call methods between beforeCall and afterClose or, to ignore all process for that dataSet.
Sencond question, how can i drop a dataSet in the method beforeFactory in birt Report designer (i can code only in the rcp application of birt because i use a .war on my server )?
Thanks,
Alphonse

A dataSet only runs if it's accessed by a report item, so dropping the items attached to a dataSet would probably be the more desired approach in your second question, I would think.
