Initializing BIRT on application startup

I am working on Spring based application and BIRT reprots are rendered through viewer servlet. No programatic Report access/manipulation is done. Could someone explain if viewer servelt initialize/starts BIRT platform/engine everytime a report is accessed through URL like http://server/myApp/run?_xxParms_goes_here"

If its true how can we make it to start only once on application startup.

i had a similar problem while working with a spring-application. 
 
But when i get you right, you are using the WebViewer? 
 
I am using Birt in a webapps-context, but i use the birt-api to pass input from the application to my report (like described here: <a class='bbc_url' href='http://www.eclipse.org/birt/phoenix/deploy/reportEngineAPI.php#reportengine'>using report engine in application</a>). 
So when I generate the first document, it takes forever because the report engine has to be started. 
In my case it helped by doing the following: 
add a new listener-context to the web.xml 
 
Something like

<listener-class><path-to-init-class>.BirtEngineInitializer</listener-class>
</listener></pre>
 
And the class looks like this:

Hi Reed,
Thanks for your reply this is very helpful. I'm actually new to BIRT reports. Yes i'm not using APIs but just call the run servlet passign the report name to display it.

Let me summarize what i understood from your reply and please correct where i'm wrong.

1- Initialize the platfrm on application startup through listner. Here the engine object created needs to be stored in some global context like Application or Session to be available later to run reports. Right?

2- Write my own servlet (not neccessary to extend run servlet of BIRT) and render reports proramatically in it using appropriate tasks like IRun, IRunAndRender etc. These tasks should be created thourgh engine object stored in session/application context by listner. Is it right?

3- I will further explore documentation but there will surely the way to through the report output to browser to display it.

=> I am storing the Birt Engine-Instance in an Singleton, which is initialized by the initializer class at startup, like i described before. But you sure can store it some way other.

=> That's right. The Birt-Tasks are available through your reportengine-instance.

I belive Singleton is better than Application/Session variable approach. I will give it try.
