Files have been touched - List Modified very slow

I've run into a problem as a result of changing permissions on directories via the windows explorer view.

All files have now been touched by me in TeamSite and when users preview in the "List Modified" view it takes way too long to display the list.

I'm wondering if someone could provide a perl snippet that may help remedy the situation.

I believe that all that is needed is to create a script that compares the Date Modified attribute on files in TeamSite vs. STAGING. If this attribute is the same then perform a "get latest" from STAGING.

This should overright the modified flag as well as me as the owner of every file in development -- :-)

Any thoughts?

I have a Perl script written that was not designed for this purpose, but I think it will work. If you think it might work, let me know and I can post it.

I wrote this script because I had users that would upload large directories full of files, after only modifying one or two of them. The idea is that first the script gets a list of Modified files, according to TeamSite. Then, it does an iwdiff on these files. For each file that does not have any changes, it does a forced get latest on the file, and TeamSite no longer recognizes it as modified.

I think this may accomplish just what i need. It actually didn't occur to me to do an iwdiff....i'm wondering if this will take a great deal of time to process for each file?

At any rate I would be very grateful if you would share your script with me.

You should realize, though. When the script does the get latest on the files that are not truly modified, they will revert back to whatever permissions they had previously. Undoing any permission changes you just made that flagged them as modified.

hey adam --- first thanks so much for throwing up your script --- it's definitely got me going on the right track. I'm was able to make a couple of small modifications to get it to run but it continues to output:

"There are still modified files."

which means that the script is making it inside the if statement on line 44:

if (`$iwhome/bin/iwlistmod $Workarea_Path`){

It's great that I'm able to get the correct development directory scanned and read as modified. Now I just need to get it to copy the files down from the Staging environment.

So, you run the script, and it recognizes that there are modified files, but it is not unmodifying the files that just have permission changes on them?

Have you tried to output @file_list to see if TeamSite thinks the files are identical?

You could add a line at the end of the if statement testing if a file is identical, so that it outputs all files that it thinks are the same:

     print "$singe_file content has been modified\n";

If you are getting here, but the get lastest still isn't working, try running the iwgetlatest command outside of the perl program. It should be saying
$iwhome/bin/iwupdate -w [red][FileName][/red]

I can't imagine that all of these things test fine, but still the update is not updating. Either way, let me know of your progress.

perhaps i should take a step back and ask a bit more about the script. Is it correct to assume that 'm that I need to create variables that will point to both staging and development directories?

For example the variable $Staging_Path needs to be set--- correct?

Sorry, I should have been clearer in the comments in the code.

All you should need to do is tell it the path to the workarea. Everything else is done dynamically.

To do that, you can use the array at the top to name a workarea, and then give it a path. When you call the script, pass the name of the workarea, and it will use that array to know what the path is.

All other variables within the script are derived from that one value.

looks like i'm having a bit more success when i run the iwdiff command with a file from the command line. But if I try to use it with a workarea directory i get "Permission Denied".

Add the line in red to your code, and then lood at the output to make sure that it is getting all of the information right for the command.

One question: We can't find any documentation for iwdiff, just iwdiffdir. What is the difference, and is there documentation for iwdiff somewhere?

The only documentation that I found was with iwdiff --help on the command line. That is how I get most of my info on CMD line tools.

the script is not making it this far down as it hangs at the iwdiff command:

@file_list = split(/\n/, `$iwhome/bin/iwdiff -q -w -s $Staging_Path $Workarea_Path`);

...it returns "Permission Denied" when I use try to iwdiff on a directory as seen here:

'Test','Y:/default/main/ba_australia/WORKAREA/beta/about/events/seminars/forms'

...I have had success when I choose a file rather than a directory....i'm wondering if this has something to do with the permissions on the directory?

I know that this is a suprise, but Solaris and Windows handle doing an iwdiff differently when it comes to directories. On Sol8, iwdiff on directories seems to have no issues, but on a W2K server, I get permission denied.

Therefore, if you want to run this script on a windows box, please try this attached version. I don't really have an environment right now where I can test it, so please let me know if there are issues.

For what it's worth - I believe iwdiff is simply GNU diff shipped with TeamSite - I don't believe it is modified from the GNU sources from which it was originally built. If it behaves differently on Windows than it does on Unix - it may be because that's how it was written. If you want to verify whether it's a problem within TeamSite - try running a similar diff accross directories on your local file system and see if it behaves any different than when run accross directories with TeamSite.
