Changing the xml DataSource during runtime

Hello, 
 
If you look in the "xml source" tab, one can see, taht the used data source is written there and is not dynamical. Example:

My problem is, that I want to open the report on many different computer. On every computer there is in a directory temp (which is defined using an environmental variable) which contains a file "output.xml". But as the temp directory is different on every computer I cannot write the path non-dynamically in the rptdesign. 
 
I know, that I can use scripting and I tried in the beforeOpen method of the data Source the following:

This works. If I press the preview-tab the right dataSource is used. But I have still got a problem with that: 
 
I want to add or delete a column to/in the data set using the row- and columnmapping of the dataset. But as the beforeOpen method just is executed in runtime the xml-structure is always empty. 
 
Is there a way to solve my problem? I tried to use the proprety Binding method of the datasouce but as seems to work the same as using the beforeOpen method. 
 
I would be glad for any suggestions!

Ok, so you have the file switched how you'd like, you just want to now change the columns that are used depending on the computer as well? Let me know.

I don't want to change the columns that are used depending on the computer, but I want to give the editor the possibility to add a column in an easy way. That means just by drag and drop for instance (like I do it with the row- and columnmapping of the dataset).

This would not be the regualar process. Typically the output.xml file will have the same columns, but different data. But there might be a case when a new column has to be add.

Yes this is correct. 
 
But I want it to be recognized as I want to add a new column to the data set for example.

If you know the computer you're going to be on to change the file name, you could probably add another field to your dataSet based on which file you bring in, since you'd know what file has what extra column. I'm not sure how this works with XML, as I haven't done this with it, but the columns are probably called with the queryText variable somehow as they are in a JDBC and flat file database. You might check this out in your report's XML source to see how you can add the column binding dynamically and then you'd just have to add a column and the binding to your table in your beforeFactory script.

By using that method I would have to know how the new column is called. Is that correct? You can add a column dynamically by using an Xpath-Expression. But I don't see how I can do it without knowing how the ne column would be called. And I dont now that. Maybe I did not described the scenario very well. Here another try: 
 
Usually the xml-files are identically. But it could happen that we have to add another column to the xml file. This would not be a change that effect just one computer, but every computer, which uses that reportdesign. So I have to add another column to the rptdesign. As the users who would do that don't have a good knowledge about programming, I would like to give them the oppertunity to add the column using the row- and columnmapping of the dataset. This would be a very easy and comfortable way to add a column. 
 
The problem is, that they have to get the new xml-file, in which the new column is included. It would be very awkward to handle this, by changing the data-souce in the datasource tab. The users should be able to do it in a comfortable way: just open the report, add the new column to the data-set and drop it into the design. 
 
Because of that I wanted to change the datasource programmatically, so they don't have to do anything to change it but just to add the column. 
 
 
I will add a picture that shows how an x-Path expression can be modified.

Have you tried setting the file in the property binding tab of the dataSet editor rather than in the beforeOpen script? Maybe this will change something.

Hi Michael,

I never used the property binding tab of the data set before. I tried to open it, but I just get the massage 'no public property is defined by the oda extension for this data set' (see attachment). Do I miss something? Do I have to do something before I can use the property binding or does it just not work with xml-files?

There is nothing you need to do. It must just not work with XML dataSources. I hadn't tried it with XML before. Sorry for misguiding you. I just assumed it was the same!
